Online Advertisements

Despite being an advertisement for fast food, it gives the subliminal message and image of sexual practices. Businesses and companies, like Burger King in this case, have incorporated the "sex sells" cliche in their advertisements to catch the attention of people. The fact that the sandwich is called the "Super Seven Incher" would make some people that think of a certain male reproductive organ because of the attention to the size. More profoundly, the picture of the woman that is about to put a supposedly long sandwich in her mouth gives the indirect image of oral sex. The caption stating, "It'll blow your mind away", hints at oral sex as well. Ads like this often overhype the actual product and are only used to catch the attention of possible consumers. Although the sandwich may be appealing, the ad itself does not appeal to me because of the sexual subliminal message.

  1. Hello!
Oh my, this advertisement is just wrong, in my opinion. This advertisement doesn't appeal to me at all either. You are right, many companies and businesses use such strategies to catch the attention of people. Today, more companies and businesses are attracting customers by the way they present their products to the world. I think that advertisements using the “sex sells” strategy are taking away from the product being presented fully. Certain ways of advertising have been popping up everywhere and there is no need for consistent advertising because if the product is good then it'll be known. Not by the way the ad is made or what message is sending out. I believe that ads should appeal to the general public not just targeting on specific ages group or group of people.

  2. Wow! I had never seen this advertisement before. This was a very good example of using “sex” to sell. I imagine that Burger King is targeting the young/middle aged male audience with the intent of trying to appeal to their sexual and natural appetite. In addition, I suspect the company is hoping to promote a cool urban image, by pushing the shock-value line. What is even more amazing than the obvious in-your-face message is how frequently the advertising industry keeps pushing the line of morality. My feeling is that this advertisement contains very little subliminal content, because its meaning is neither hidden nor concealed. Or maybe this is a sign that we (the public) have become so desensitize to its implication. I'm disappointed in Burger King.

  3. lol, this is a clever advertisement. I have not see this one before. But you are very right, now a days advertisements are alot more sexual than they used to be. This gets more customers to buy the given product. It draws alot of attention and things like this makes the ad. stay on peoples minds longer which is the main reason why they make ads like this. Skcoolgirl also makes a good point, now a days, "sex sells" its sad to think about because like she mentions, the public, now, is alot more sex oriented than they used to be. we are way more exposed to this kind of advertisement and this does not mean that the claim is strong or valid, this way of advertisement does not necessarily make the product any better than the next. BUT, great post either way.

  4. It's said to see that food companies have to resort to the "sex sells" method of advertising. It used to be that only liquor and cigarette companies would use those tactics. Nowadays it seems like all companies are doing it. Unfortunately, that's our society today. Whether we admit it or not, our society is surrounded by temptations and vices.
I like how you chose an ad that is similar to pretty much any ad you see in magazines because it reflects on the marketing strategy of all companies no matter what type of product they're selling. It definitely caught my attention, by for all the wrong reasons. Great post.
